Scientists have figured out how to penguin chicks can live for months without food

King penguin chicks are able to go without food for months because their cells are switched to a special "energy efficient" mode.

During the winter of forced starvation length of four to five months, the body uses nutrients chicks with maximum benefits to the body, said French biologists.

Pierre-Axel Monterne from the University of Lyon and his colleagues discovered this property of the organism penguins, making sure the work is varied as the cells in the muscles of chicks during the hunger strike.

As the researchers note, the muscles are the main source of heat in birds and animals, and at the same time, the largest consumer of energy.

In turn, a heat source therein protrude mitochondria - specific organelles, which are synthesized and cleaved sugar molecule ATP "energovalyuty" cells. Monterne and his colleagues found that this part of the cell switches to a special "energy efficient" mode during prolonged starvation, which is lacking in other warm-blooded animals.

According to scientists, the winter mitochondria young penguins on average produce more ATP molecules per unit of nutrients and oxygen than did cells of other animals. When getting enough food, "power plant" of the cell returned to normal.

Combined with the ability to experience hypothermia without serious consequences, this "trick" helps the chicks survive the hungry months.
